What is PAT Testing Training?

PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) training covers the inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment to ensure it is safe to use. Required under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

Why Become a PAT Testing Trainer?

Faulty electrical equipment causes around 25 deaths and 350 serious injuries in UK workplaces each year. Qualified PAT testers are needed in every organisation using portable electrical equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
There is no specific law requiring PAT testing, but the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require all electrical systems and equipment to be maintained to prevent danger. PAT testing is the most common way to demonstrate compliance.
How often should PAT testing be carried out?
The frequency depends on the type of equipment and its environment. The IET Code of Practice provides guidance: office equipment may need testing every 4 years, while construction site equipment may need testing every 3 months.
Who can carry out PAT testing?
PAT testing must be carried out by a 'competent person' — someone with the knowledge, skills and experience to carry out the work safely. A formal PAT testing qualification demonstrates competence.
Are these PAT testing resources free?
Yes — all 5 resources are completely free to download and use in your training sessions with no registration required.
